ALMONT, Mich.- On Wednesday, May 23, Rochester College Head Baseball Coach Jordan Ackerman announced the signing of Almont High School graduate Derek Wiggins.
Wiggins joins the Warriors pitching staff after leading his Almont Raiders to a Blue Water Area Conference. Wiggins finished the regular season with a 5-1 record striking out 62 batters in 46 innings of work. Wiggins led the Raiders with a 1.06 ERA and walked only 15 batters.
With his success on the mound, it is likely Wiggins will notch First Team All-BWAC honors up from being an Honorable Mention selection last season. Wiggins was also nominated to pitch in the Michigan High School Southeast All-Star game being played in Port Huron, MI this summer. To top off his successful season, Wiggins was selected as the Blue Water Area Conference Player of the Year.
Coach Ackerman on Wiggins:
"Derek attended our Holiday Baseball Camp last December and really gave us an opportunity to see him. Right away, we were impressed with how much command he had of his pitches. In the BWAC Championship game against Richmond High School, he threw a fantastic game. He was clearly hitting all of his spots and was keeping hitters off balance the entire game. I know Coach Watts (Warriors pitching coach) is very eager to start working with him and get him ready for next spring. Even though Derek has been tremendous on the field this season, what impressed me most is his success in the classroom. Derek is a great student and mature young man that comes from a very supportive family. I am sure Derek will enjoy a fine career here at RC."
