ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.--The Warriors traveled to Gary, IN to play in the Association of Independent Institutions Classic and came away with an overtime win against Wilberforce University 76-75. The Warriors moved to 22-1 on the season after the hard fought win. A Wilberforce 3 pointer at the buzzer sent the game to OT.
The Warriors trailed for a good part of the first half, but took a 38-34 lead into halftime. RC eventually pushed their lead to 11 with 6 minutes left in the game, but Wilberforce fought back and hit a 3 pointer off an RC turnover to send the game to OT. Wilberforce took a 2 point lead in overtime, but Jaylen Larry
hit a shot to tie it up. Wilberforce answered with a jumper of their own followed by a Paris Pereira
free throw. With the Warriors down 1 and time running out, Angelo Griffis
was able to hit can a 3 to put RC up 2. He then stole the ball and got fouled. He hit both free throws to put RC up by 4. Wilberforce hit another 3 point shot, but it was not enough as RC came away with the 1 point win.
RC head coach Klint Pleasant
was happy with the win. "Credit Wilberforce. They are very good," Pleasant said. "We didn't play well in any phase and I'm sure some of that was due to Wilberforce. I'm proud we found a way to win. It says a lot about our senior leadership and our mental toughness."
Griffis and Jaylen Larry
both had huge games. Griffis ended with 29 points and 13 rebounds for his 8th double-double on the season. Larry was huge on the glass as he pulled down 20 rebounds to go along with his 12 points for his 7th double-double of the year. Armand Cartwright
added 15 points and Justin Nafso
finished with 11 points.
The 7th ranked Warriors will take on Lincoln Christian University in the second game of the AII Classic on Saturday at 2pm Eastern in Gary, IN.
