The Rochester College Warriors men's basketball team cracked the top 5 in the latest NAIA national ranking for the first time in school history. The Warriors are currently 23-1 and are tied for 4th in the country with Bethel College. The poll, released Tuesday afternoon, is voted on by a panel of coaches from across the country and is determined by a point system based on how each voter ranks the best teams.
Everyone seems to be enjoying this basketball season, including Rochester College interim President, Dr. Brian Stogner. "We have been thrilled to watch our men's basketball team this year," said Dr. Stogner. "They are disciplined and hard-working, on and off the court. We're very proud of Coach Pleasant, his staff, and this fine group of student-athletes."
The Warriors are ranked #1 in the nation in scoring defense, only giving up 61.2 points per game. They also rank #1 in scoring margin by outscoring their opponents by 23 points on average and #2 in field goal percentage defense by holding their opponents to 38.2%. RC lands at #4 in turnover margin by having almost 5 fewer turnovers per game than their opponents, and is 7th in defensive rebounds per game (30.8). In all, the Warriors are in the top 10 in the nation in twelve statistical categories and are in the top 20 in four others.
Senior Angelo Griffis (Kalamazoo, Mich./Ferris State University), who was recently named to the Bevo Francis Award watch list (an award given to the best small college basketball player in the nation), continues to lead the Warriors. His 20.6 points per game (23rd best in the NAIA) and 8.4 rebounds per game both lead the team. Another senior, Jaylen Larry (Flint, Mich./Kalamazoo Valley CC), is right behind Griffis in both categories. Larry averages 15.1 points per game to go along with his 8.1 rebounds per game. Larry also ranks 6thin the NAIA in field goal percentage, connecting on 65.8% of his shots, and is 11th in the nation in total blocks with 39.
Redshirt freshman Armand Cartwright (Bloomfield, Mich./Bloomfield HS) is currently averaging 11.5 points per game, while his back-court mates, sophomore Justin Nafso (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) and senior Paris Pereira (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS), average 9.7 and 9.4 points per game respectively. Redshirt freshman Cap Wilson (Davison, Mich./Goodrich HS) adds another 8.2 points per game to give the Warriors a well balanced scoring attack.
RC has three straight home games coming up against Indiana University Northwest, Silver Lake College and University of Maine-Fort Kent. They then go on the road to take on St. Ambrose University in a game which will be played in Gary, IN. Their final game of the season will be at home in front of a capacity crowd and will be the first ever game in the brand new Garth Pleasant Arena on February 18th against Great Lakes Christian College.
