
MARTIN, Tenn.- The Rochester College men's basketball team matched up and held their own last night (Sat., Nov. 19) against NCAA division I University of Tennessee Martin (1-3).
The first half belonged to the Skyhawks as they led by 17 at one point. The Warriors mounted a quick comback to pull within 10 at the half.
In the second half the Warriors battled right out of the locker room. At the 13:46 mark the Warriors were down by one after sophomore Evan Walker (Macomb, MI/Dakota) scored on a fast break lay-up. The Skyhawks pulled ahead after several missed Warrior free throws and continued on for their first victory of the season.
The Warriors received great play out of junior Drammel Hogan (Detroit, MI/Walled Lake Western) who scored 19 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Torey Throop (Vestaburg, MI/Kirtland CC) and junior Sean Mattia (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) scored 12 points apeice while senior Rick Doran (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) scored 9 points to pace the 9-2 Warriors.
The Warriors shot 35.1% from the field compared to the Skyhawks' 55.4%. 46 of the Skyhawks' points were scored in the paint to the Warriors' 24. The Warriors took advantage of the Skyhawks' 15 turnovers by scoring 14 points off turnovers.
"Playing a division I team was a great test for us," said RC assistant basketball coach Tom Webb. "At the end of the day, you cannot win shooting 12 of 23 from the free throw line and getting out rebounded 45 to 29."
"We showed toughness in the second half by pulling the game within one. Our guys fought hard and we will continue to build off of this game," Webb finished.
The Warriors match up against Eastern Michigan University on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7pm.
