
SPRINGFIELD, IL- Rochester College fell to the second ranked Apprentice Builders in round two of the Small College World Series today, May 8, 2-1 in extra innings. Johnny Barreto (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) pitched a gem, going 6.1 innings and giving up no earned runs.
David Woodson (Vallejo, CA/Vallejo) led the Warriors with 2 hits. Senior Ryan Chipka (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) went 1 for 3. Spenser McKee (Royal Oak, MI/Mariner) had Rochester College's only run of the game in the sixth inning. Barreto pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six hits and 1 run off of a McKee error in left field. Barreto struck out 8 batters, and only walked one.
Travis Franklin went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Builders. Zach Harding batted .500 for the game, and brought in the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chris Scarola was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Ryland Edwards pitched 5.1 innings before giving up 1 run in the sixth. He only surrendered 2 hits and struck out 2 batters. Same Massie came in as relief in the sixth, and struck out 4 Warriors in 2.2 innings of work.
The game was a pitcher's duel, with both Barreto and Edwards hitting their spots. Rochester College was able to spot Barreto a run in the sixth inning, after McKee stole home on an error by the catcher Harding. Barreto started the seventh inning, and was pulled after putting two on base and McKee bobbled a fly ball in left field to bring a run in. Ron Carter (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) came in as relief, throwing one pitch that turned a double play.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Warriors were able to get three base runners on with 1 out. Massie struck out Woodson and Hacias to hold Rochester College scoreless. Carter started the eight, putting two on base early. Fernando Delacruz (Sarasota, FL/Riverview) was brought in to finish the game, but gave up a walk off a single to left center field, ending the game at 2-1.
Rochester College will play again tomorrow, May 9, at 9:00 AM against the winner of Clark State Community College vs. Selma.
