[RC Athletics] Basketball Teams Earn Post Season Honors

The Rochester College Basketball teams were well represented earning several awards at the USCAA National banquet last night in Uniontown, PA. Prior to the USCAA releasing the post season honors, several Warriors were announced as recipients of A.I.I. All Conference honors.

Seniors Dramell Hogan (Detroit, MI/Walled Lake Western) and Drew Maynard (Lake Orion, MI/Valdosta State) earned First Team All A.I.I. honors. On the women's side, senior Sam Tomaschko (Romeo, MI/Romeo) notched a spot on the First Team All A.I.I. team.

For their stellar numbers all season, Hogan and Maynard garnished USCAA First Team All-American honors while junior Stavros Schizas (Athens, Greece/Kirtland CC) was announced as a USCAA Honorable Mention.

Other than grabbing more Academic All American awards than any other team at the banquet, the Warriors highest honor was when Tomaschko made a familiar trip up to the awards table to grab her third consecutive First Team All American award in three years.

[RC Athletics] 2013 USCAA Basketball National Championships Fields Announced

Newport News, VA – The fields for the 2013 USCAA Men's and Women's Basketball National Championships have been finalized. The Championships, hosted by Penn State Fayette in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, will take place February 26^th through March 2^nd. The official brackets with game times are attached to this release.

Gaining bids in the Men's Division I basketball bracket are Rochester College, Ave Maria University, Daemen College, Lindenwood-Belleville, Southern Virginia University, Apprentice School, Victory University, and St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. Gaining bids in the Men's Division II bracket are NHTI, Andrews University, Berkeley College-New York, Penn State Beaver, Central Penn College, Penn State York, Vermont Tech, Albany College of Pharmacy, Warren Wilson College, and Penn State Fayette.

The women's basketball field has split into Division I and Division II this year. Gaining a bid in the Women's Division I bracket are Daemen College, Ave Maria University, Lindenwood-Belleville, Rochester College, Virginia University Lynchburg, Southern Virginia University, Robert Morris University Springfield, and University of Maine-Fort Kent. Bids for Women's Division II have been secured by Central Maine Community College, Penn State Beaver, Albany College of Pharmacy, Penn State Brandywine, Berkeley College-New York, University of Cincinnati-Clermont, University of Maine-Machias, and Penn State Fayette.

The tournament kicks off with the USCAA Basketball Skills Competition at the Penn State Fayette Main Arena on February 26^th at 2:00 PM, followed by the All-American Banquet that evening at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. Tickets for the 2013 Championships and the 2013 Banquet are available at uscaa.ticketleap.com. All four divisions will begin play on February 27th with championship games being held on March 2nd. Before the start of the 2012-13 basketball campaign, there was one section on the schedule that stood out among the rest. With the men taking on NCAA DI Oakland University on Thursday and University of Detroit-Mercy on Saturday before heading to the Madonna University Classic and the women taking on Spring Arbor University tomorrow followed by two top 15 NAIA teams in (3) Indiana University Wesleyan and (13) Taylor University this weekend at IWU, the Rochester College Basketball teams have their work cut out for them.

Riding on an 11-3 record, the men's basketball team is off to a strong first half start. If the Warriors can match their play in the second half of the season, they may crack the top 25 in the NAIA and remain in the top 3 of the USCAA. "We have a challenging stretch coming up," said Head Coach Klint Pleasant. "We of course play Oakland University and the University of Detroit at the end of this week. It is always exciting to have the chance to play local NCAA D1 teams. It is good for our program and school in terms of PR and it gives our guys a chance to play against top competition so we can continue to get better, especially down the stretch. We are especially grateful to OU because they have made a commitment to play us for the last several years and it helps."

Last season the Warriors played a close first half with the Grizzlies but were unable to keep pace losing down the stretch, 77-62. With new additions and the return of several starters, the Warriors are looking to give the Grizzlies a run this year.

After matching up against two tough NCAA DI programs, the Warriors head to Madonna University to play against some of the best NAIA programs in the mid-west. "We are fortunate to be in Madonna's Classic because it will give us a chance to play a conference opponent in Johnson and Wales and then a top 10 NAIA D2 team in Grace. Those two games will be a real challenge and we will have to be prepared mentally and hope that shots fall," said Pleasant.

Also preparing for the tough games ahead are Head Coach Eric Sims and the Lady Warriors basketball team.

After playing against tough NAIA opponents, the women's basketball team looks to avenge a loss when they take on Spring Arbor University tonight at home (Oakland Christian H.S.). Last time the Lady Warriors tipped off against the SAU Cougars, they suffered a 63-68 overtime loss.

The Lady Warriors currently stand at a 4-5 record looking at the toughest stretch of games on the horizon. Coach Sims is not looking at changing a thing as his team prepares for the upcoming games. "I try to keep our approach to every game the same," said Sims. "We will work on a specific game plan that we think will work against the team we are playing and go over that with the girls on the court and in the room."

Despite the 4-5 start, Coach Sims strives for his team to get better every day. "We have been in every game we have played this year," said Sims. "Many of them have just come down to a few plays, a stretch, or a half where we didn't execute like I would want us to."

Before every game, Coach Sims takes his squad through videos and scouting reports to help them prepare for the team they are matching up against. "We spend time scouting each of our opponents and use that, but we also try to work on things that help our team be successful. Since we already played Spring Arbor and Indiana-Wesleyan this season, we will use our previous game to help us learn what we can do better and hopefully that comes out on the court," said Sims.

With more games under their belts, the Lady Warriors are looking to make a strong push against some of the toughest competition they will see all season. "We plan to win every game we play in. We have an extremely difficult schedule coming up with Spring Arbor and 2 top 15 NAIA teams in Taylor and Indiana Wesleyan plus Oakland University, IPFW, and Grand Valley State near the end of December," said Sims. "We want to keep improving and make a run at the A.I.I. conference title and USCAA National Championship."

[RC Athletics] Pleasant Honored as NAIA Coach of Character

In just one season, Rochester College Head Basketball coach Klint Pleasant has made his mark not only as a winning coach, but also as the leader of a team honored for its character on and off the court.

On June 1, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) honored Coach Pleasant as the Association of Independent Institutions (AII) 2012 NAIA Coach of Character.

The A.I.I. Conference, made up of 34 college institutions throughout the United States, honors one coach each year whose program displays the NAIA five core values: Integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. This honor carries extra value, as this past year was Rochester College's first year in the A.I.I. and NAIA.

Coach Pleasant is very honored to have been the recipient of this award. "We continue to be very grateful to the NAIA and the A.I.I. This award is humbling," said Coach Pleasant. "I had no idea. I am grateful for the nomination as well as being recognized from this association. I hope this will solidify our standing with the NAIA moving forward and bring some recognition to Rochester College."

The award has not only meant a great deal to Coach Pleasant and his basketball team. The award has shared meaning with Rochester College President Rubel Shelly. "This award means that Rochester College is being true to its mission," said Dr. Shelly. "We have promised to provide for the intellectual, social, and athletic development of the men and women who attend here in a Christian environment. Klint and his staff in the Athletic Department are following through on that promise. The award is certainly an honor for Coach Pleasant at a personal level. It is also and affirmation of everything we are doing as a Christian college."

Sticking to the mission of Rochester College has not been a tough task for Coach Pleasant as it is "the way" for him and his coaching staff. "The mission of Rochester College stands for all the things that end up making a team great like unselfishness, discipline, being on time, and giving your best. These are things we stand for," said Coach Pleasant.

Taking over for his father, Garth Pleasant, Coach Pleasant stated that he simply followed the blue print his dad had left. "We just kept doing the same things my dad did for 38 years," said Coach Pleasant. "The important thing has been the kind of student-athletes that we have recruited, guys who fit the personality and mission of the college. When these guys get here, we simply focus on the things that we think are important like servant leadership, leaving the locker room cleaner than how we found it, the way we act in restaurants and hotels, the way we act before and after a game. These are things that we are always talking about and are always emphasizing."

Throughout the year, the Warrior's basketball team does several team-building activities that Coach Pleasant feels has provided his team a chance to develop team chemistry. Coach Pleasant takes his team on retreats, to church, has his team sponsor a family during the holidays, and is always stressing the things that are more important than wins and losses. "Over time, the way we do things wears off on the guys. So really, this is an award for our team and for our guys and for the other coaches too because they all have embraced the Champions of Character attitude," said Coach Pleasant.

It is not uncommon for President Shelly to receive letters or phone calls regarding the great behavior of the RC basketball team. "When one fellow in the stands was expressing his pleasure and amazement that the team was policing the area around its bench for cups and trash, I just smiled and said, ‘That's the way of things with Coach Pleasant and his team.' More of his players are likely to remember these little things than all the game scores," said Dr. Shelly. "I count it a great honor to get to work with Coach Pleasant and to call him my friend."

"This award is a testament to our guys. I do not think you receive this award if your whole program is not presenting itself in an appropriate way. I really think this is an award that our guys have achieved due to the way they act," Coach Pleasant finished.

In order for Coach Pleasant to receive the Coach of Character award, a player had to write an essay on why they felt their coach should receive the award.

[RC Athletics] RC Basketball Teams Finish Season on Top

Rochester Hills, Mich- With the snow melted and the temperatures rising, the end of basketball season has come upon us once again. As the baseball and softball players begin their season, the Rochester College men and women's basketball teams finished their seasons last week at the USCAA National Championships Tournament. The Men ended the year 26-8, and second in the USCAA. The women put up 22 wins, and ended the year fourth in the USCAA.

The men came into the season under new head coach, Klint Pleasant. The team started out hot, winning 9 of their first 10 games. The Warriors played a tough middle of the season, with losses against Tennessee-Martin, Eastern Michigan, and Oakland University. Rochester College played extremely well at home, going a perfect 12-0. Heading into the USCAA National Tournament, ranked as the top seed, the Warriors won all but one game in the months of January and February. While in Uniontown, Pennsylvania for the national tournament, Rochester College came out strong with two victories over Maine-Fort Kent and a tough Ave Maria team. The Warriors fell in a heartbreaker to Oakwood University in the finals, 54-51, to conclude the season.

"I am very pleased with the way our season went. Obviously we wanted to win the championship game and I especially wanted it for our seniors and all our former players who have given so much to the program," said Coach Klint Pleasant. "The season was a success. Just to get there took amazing effort. We had great leadership all year and were fortunate enough to have a bunch of first class guys."

Dramell Hogan (Detroit, MI./ Walled Lake Western) led the Warriors with 16.13 points per game this season, and was second in rebounding with 7.1 rebounds per game. Senior Rick Doran (Clinton Twp.,/ MI./ Chippewa Valley) averaged 12.47 points per game, and a team high 7.33 points per game. Both Hogan and Doran were named first team All-Americans by the USCAA, as well as being named to the All-Tournament team. Stephan Henning (Beloit, WI./ Rochester) led the team with 4.93 assists per game, and averaged just over 6 points per game. Henning was named as an All-American honorable mention by the USCAA.

Looking forward to next season, the Warriors will lose three seniors: Doran, Henning, and Torey Throop (Vestaburg, MI./ Kirtland CC). The team's leading scorer, Hogan, will be back for one more year next season. When asked about next season, Coach Pleasant said, "I am already antsy to get going for next year. I am so excited about the guys we have coming back and I expect us to have a very productive off-season. The key will once again be leadership and a commitment to work ethic and a team attitude. I am also excited about some of the recruits we are working to add."

Much like the men's team, the women's basketball team finished on top of the USCAA. In his second season as headman, Eric Sims led the Lady Warriors to a 22-15 record. Rochester College played a tough schedule against Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Grand Valley State University. The Lady Warriors had big wins over Briarcliff College, Marygrove College, and Indiana University- Northwest. They put together a great run in the month of January, going 8-1, with their only loss to Calvin College. Rochester College went into the USCAA National Tournament as the number one seed, and started off hot with wins in the first two rounds to advance to the final four. The Lady Warriors ended the tournament with losses in the semis to Selma and UC-Clermont in the third place game.

"Overall, we have a lot to be proud of about this past season. I believe we won the most games in any one season in this program's history (22)," said Coach Sims. "We overcame a lot of adversity with all of the injuries that we had. Ka'imana Ka'aikala (Stanton, MI./ Lakeview), Whitney Newsom (Rochester Hills, MI./ Adams) and Jazzmone Russell (Hurricane, WV./ Hurricane) all did some good things in bigger roles as wing players. Abby Schlaegel (Port Huron, MI./ St. Clair CC) and Liz Stockwell (Moline, IL./ Moline) had solid senior seasons. Sam Tomaschko (Romeo, MI./ Romeo) once again led us offensively and defensively to the point where she made 1st team All-American and the All-National Tournament team. And Lexy Newsom (Rochester Hills, MI./ Adams) played point guard to such success that she was honorable mention All-American."

As the Lady Warriors prepare for next season, their leading scorer and rebounder, Tomaschko, will be back for one more season. Tomaschko averaged 12.79 points per game and 10.49 rebounds per game. She finished in the top 12 in rebounding in all of the USCAA. Ke'ala and Ka'imana each contributed just less than 9 points per game this season. Lexy Newsom will return as Rochester College's leader in assists at 4.71 assists per game. Tomaschko was named first team USCAA All-American team, and the All-Tournament team. Lexy Newsom was an All-American honorable mention. Ke'ala Ka'aikala (Stanton, MI./ Lakeview), Lexy Newsom, and Whitney Newsom were honored as Academic All-Americans.

"I'm happy that we made it to the final four and I look for even more improvement next year," said Coach Sims. "We have just about everyone coming back next year so I expect to compete for a USCAA national championship. We also will have Katy Pierson coming off a redshirt year and a good recruiting class coming in so there is plenty to look forward to in the future."

Uniontown, Pennsylvania- The 2012 All-Americans were announced tonight, March 6, at the USCAA National Tournament banquet.

Ke'ala Ka'aikala (Stanton, MI./ Lakeview), Lexy Newsom (Rochester Hills, MI./ Adams), and Whitney Newsom (Rochester Hills, MI./ Adams) all were named Academic All-Americans for Rochester College. Lexy Newsom was named an All-American honorable mention. Newsom averaged 4.71 assists per game to lead the team, and just over 7 points per game. Sam Tomaschko (Romeo, MI./ Romeo) was named a first team All-American. Tomaschko led the Lady Warriors with 12.79 points per game and 10.49 rebounds per game. She was twelfth in the USCAA for rebounds, and had 13 double doubles on the season.

Stephan Henning (Beloit, WI./ Rochester) received All-America honorable mention honors. Henning finished fifth in the USCAA for assists, averaging 4.93 per game. Dramell Hogan (Detroit, MI./ Walled Lake Western) and Rick Doran (Clinton Twp., MI./ Chippewa Valley) were both awarded first team All-America honors. Hogan led Rochester College with 16.1 points per game, twelfth best in the USCAA. He was third this season in the USCAA shooting 57.8% from the floor. Rick Doran led the team with 7.33 rebounds per game, and was eighth in the USCAA shooting 55.4% from the field. Doran was fifth in the USCAA with 40 blocks on the season.

Uniontown, Pennsylvania- The USCAA National Basketball tournament kicked off today, March 6, with the skills competition. Each team competed in the free throw, three point, and dunk contest.

The women's free throw contest opened up the competition. Ke'ala Ka'aikala (Stanton, MI./ Lakeview) represented the Lady Warriors, and post a 17 in the first round. She took on Kaitlyn Novak of Penn State Fayette in the semifinals, defeating her 23-17. Judy Pierre of Briarcliff moved on from the other semifinal to take on Ka'aikala. The final was best of ten free throws with no time limit. Pierre and Ka'aikala tied, each shooting 6 of 10. The tiebreaker was once again best of ten. Pierre shot 8 of 10 before losing to Ka'aikala, who shot a perfect 10 for 10 on her way to the 2012 USCAA Women's free throw championship.

After the women's free throw competition, the men took the court for the three-point contest, with Ioannis Lekakis (Greece) representing Rochester College. The men had three racks of 15 balls, with one money ball worth 3 points per rack. Lekakis made 4 of his 15. In the second and third rounds, the men had five racks, with 90 seconds to complete each rack. Brandon Rios of the College of St. Joseph went on to win the contest.

Whitney Newsom (Rochester Hills, MI./ Adams), defending champion from 2011, represented the Lady Warriors in the women's three-point contest. The women had three racks of five balls, with one money ball worth 3 points in the first round. Newsom hit 4 of 5, including the money ball, on the middle rack for a score of 10 points. The semifinals followed the same rules as the men's competition. Newsom opened the semifinal round with a score of 20. She went on to face off against Karlee Biskup of Central Maine in the final round. Newsom put up 18 points, winning by 3, for back-to-back three-point contest championships.

The men's dunk contest concluded the day's contest. Each dunker had 25 seconds to complete a dunk. There were unlimited attempts in the allotted 25 seconds. Round one was made of two dunks. The top six scorers moved on to round two. Kourea Hayes (Ypsilanti, MI./ Belleville) dunked for Rochester College, but was unable to complete a dunk in round one. Hayes missed two attempts at a windmill, and one off the backboard in his first dunk. In his second dunk, Hayes attempted to bounce the ball off the court, off the backboard, and then dunk it. After two failed tries, he attempted a last second dunk that did not go down.

Tournament play begins tomorrow, March 7. The Rochester College men tip-off against Maine- Fort Kent at 11:15 a.m., and the women tip-off at 1:15 against Central Maine Community College.

[RC Athletics] Warrior Basketball Teams Ready for National Tournament

Rochester Hills, Mich.- The USCAA National Tournament bids have been sent out, and both the men and women's basketball teams will be competing for a national title next week in Uniontown, PA.

After a great 24-7 first season as head coach of the Warriors, Klint Pleasant and his team will be competing for the program's fifth national title. Rochester College finished the regular season ranked #1 in the USCAA Coach's Poll, an honor they held for most of the season. The Warriors finished 12-0 at home, and had big wins over Huntington University, Penn State- Fayette, and Kuyper College. Coach Pleasant prepared his team well with a tough early season schedule against NCAA Division I opponents: Kent State University, Eastern Michigan University, University of Tennessee Martin, and Oakland University.

Junior forward Dramell Hogan leads the team with 16.31 ppg, and is second with 7.1 rb/g. Rick Doran had a stellar senior year, leading the team with 7.33 rb/g and 12.47 ppg. Hogan and Doran both had 7 double doubles during the regular season. Senior Stephan Henning has been showing his team leadership, sharing the ball well with just under 5 assists per contest, and 6.33 ppg. As a team, the Warriors are averaging just over 72 ppg, and shooting 45% from the floor.

The women's team head into the USCAA Tournament ranked #2 in the Coach's Poll. With a 20-13 record, the Lady Warriors have been ranked in the top three all season. They have big wins over Spring Arbor University, Marygrove College, Briarcliffe, and at Penn State-Fayette. Coach Sims has his team road tested, having played at Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Grand Valley State University. The Lady Warriors will be playing for their first national title, but this will be their third time in the past three years returning to the Nationals.

Sam Tomaschko has been a force to reckon with all season, averaging a team high 12.79 ppg and 10.49 rb/g. She has had 13 double doubles during the regular season and is 12^th in the USCAA for rebounding. Junior Lexy Newsome leads the team with 4.71 assists per game and is second with 2 steals per game. Senior Abby Schlaegel has made her presence felt, averaging just over 7 ppg and 4.36 rb/g. She is shooting 33% from beyond the arc. As a team, Rochester College put up an average of 61.24 ppg during the regular season and have been rebounding the ball extremely well, with 39 boards per game.

The Warriors mens and womens teams leave for Uniontown, PA, next week. The tournament is being hosted at Penn State- Fayette and play begins on March 6 and continues to March 10. On Monday, Dec. 12th, the USCAA released the week three coaches poll. The men's basketball team continues to hold down the number one ranking while the women's basketball team jumped up one spot to the number four ranking.

On Monday, November 28th, the USCAA released the week one National Coaches Poll and the Rochester College basketball teams were on top.

The men's team is currently ranked number one in the nation according to the USCAA National Coaches Poll. The men are 9-3 with two of the losses coming from NCAA division I opponents University of Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Michigan University.

The women's team is holding down the number four ranking with a 6-4 record against some very tough opponents in Wayne State University, Oakland University, and Hope College.

On Friday, Nov. 4th, the USCAA released the Academic All Americans for the 2011 men's and women's soccer season. Rochester College was represented well by landing five student athletes to the list.

In order to be selected as an Academic All American, student athletes must carry a 3.5 or higher grade point average and be a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Representing the men's soccer team was senior Chris Gerhardt (Macomb, MI/Lutheran North), junior Pete Nelson (Waterford, MI), and sophomore Daniel Seargeant (Wallasey, England/Mossland).

The women's soccer team was represented by senior Carlee Barackman (Plymouth, MI/Plymouth) and sophomore Kelsey Littmann (Oxford, MI/Oxford).

[RC Athletics] Basketball Teams Both Victorious in Home Opener

ROCHESTER HILLS, MICH.- The Rochester College men's and women's basketball teams did not upset the Warrior faithful tonight at Rochester High School. The Lady Warriors beat Spring Arbor University (1-1) by a final score of 45-29 while the men's team took care of Madonna University (0-1) by a final score of 73-50.

The Lady Warriors opened up the evening on fire as they took an early lead and never looked back. Junior Sam Tomaschko (Romeo, MI/Romeo) picked right up where she left off in last year's All American season by scoring 20 points and grabbing 19 rebounds.

The Lady Warriors went into half with a 28-11 lead and went on to win despite being outscored 18-17 in the second half.

The Lady Warriors play at home on Saturday against the University of Michigan- Dearborn at 1pm.

After a very exciting first game, the men's team maintained their undefeated record with a fast paced performance. The Warriors were led by junior Dramell Hogan (Novi, MI/Walled Lake Western) who accounted for 29 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Stephan Henning (Beloit, WI/Rochester) and junior Sean Mattia (Sterling Heights, MI/Sterling Heights) each scored 11 points while senior Ricky Doran (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) scored 8 points and tore down 12 rebounds.

The Warriors head to NCAA Division I Kent State on Monday to take on the Golden Flash. Game time is set for 7pm.
